IND vs NZ 2021: Twitter Erupts As Ajaz Patel Takes All 10 Wickets Against India In First Innings Of Mumbai Test

New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, on Saturday, became only the third bowler to pick all 10 wickets in an innings in Test cricket when he single-handedly bowled India out during the first innings of the ongoing Mumbai Test.

Ajaz Patel, who was born in Mumbai, joins Jim Laker and Anil Kumble as the only bowlers to attain this incredible feat in the entire history of Test cricket. The 33-year-old bowled a total of 47.5 overs out of the 109.5 which the Kiwis sent down.

On Day 1, he broke the 80-run opening stand with the wicket of Shubman Gill, who edged to slip. Ajaz Patel then dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli for ducks, via bowled and lbw respectively. Shreyas Iyer was the fourth to fall, and the last wicket on Day 1, caught by wicket-keeper Tom Blundell.

On the second day, Ajaz Patel started off with two wickets in two balls: Wriddhiman Saha was trapped lbw, and R Ashwin was bowled with a beauty.

After a 67-run partnership between centurion Mayank Agarwal and Axar Patel, who also scored a fifty, Ajaz Patel was quick to wrap up India’s innings. Agarwal edged a soft nick to Blundell while Patel was out lbw while shouldering arms to a big in-spinning delivery.

Jayant Yadav and Mohammed Siraj were the final two nails – both caught out while attempting big shots.

As soon as the final wicket was claimed, Ajaz Patel roared in delight, his teammates surrounded him and were elated. The Wankhede crowd gave a standing ovation to this rare feat they have witnessed courtesy of the Mumbai-born spinner.

Ajaz Patel’s figures of 10/119 are now the best innings bowling figures by a visiting spinner in India, best bowling figures in a Test innings against India, and the best-ever bowling figures by a New Zealand bowler.
