IND vs NZ: Former India Selector Sunil Joshi Selects Kuldeep Yadav Over Yuzvendra Chahal In His India Squad For The 2023 ODI World Cup

Sunil Joshi has selected in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal in his India selection for the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. The former India selector believes Chahal has lost his spark and wants him to play domestic cricket to rediscover his form.

Chahal made the statement after taking three wickets in two One-Day Internationals this year, including 2/43 against New Zealand and 1/58 against Sri Lanka. In 2023, the 32-year-old also took four wickets in four T20Is.

Former India selector Sunil Joshi advised the Rohit Sharma-led team to play domestic cricket for the 32-year-old spinner to restore his form as they prepared for the 2018 ODI World Cup.

Joshi explained to ESPNCricinfo: “Any bowler will go through that phase at some point. Chahal is most likely in that stage. Someone like Chahal, who is unable to gain game time in the middle, should surely suggest that the team management send him to play domestic cricket. Match time is critical for him to regain his form. That appears to be the best preparation for Chahal.”

Sunil Joshi was asked if he would select Chahal for his 15-person World Cup squad, to which he responded, “No.” He provided an explanation, saying: “Jadeja will be part of my team. If he gets out of sync, you have Axar as a backup. If I need another legspinner, I’d definitely look at Washington Sundar or Ravi Bishnoi since Bishnoi is more consistent, has a quicker arm motion, and is a better fielder than Chahal.”

Sunil Joshi praised Kuldeep Yadav for having exceptional ball control. He wants him to keep giving his reliable performances.

“Kuldeep Yadav is in a state of complete calm. He needs to be more consistent. He must consider the tactical aspect. He must decide how he will approach each team and venue. The World Cup is being held in India, yet each venue has a unique character in terms of pitch, soil, and climate. He needs to plan accordingly” Sunil Joshi explained to ESPNCricinfo.

This year, Kuldeep Yadav has been in outstanding form. He took five Sri Lankan wickets in two one-day internationals before taking six New Zealand wickets in three games. Later, he also had success against the Kiwis in the two T20Is.
