Former India captain Virat Kohli returned to his best form in white-ball cricket and started the World Cup year on a great note, scoring two centuries in the three-match series against Sri Lanka. Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Virat Kohli for playing grounded shots and said that an extra two runs in an attempt to hit a six would lead to a wicket.

The 34-year-old scored his 46th ODI century in the third and final ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. He scored an unbeaten 166 off 110 balls with 13 fours and eight sixes and scored 66 runs while running between the wickets. The right-handed batsman was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

He Not Only Runs For Himself, But Also For His Partner – Sunil Gavaskar

Speaking to Sports Talk, Sunil Gavaskar said that Virat Kohli does not take too many risks because he has the ability to run hard between the wickets.

“It’s not important to try and hit only sixes in limited-overs cricket. The difference between four and six is two runs, but the risk percentage is up to 90 percent. Kohli knows that his running between the wicket is brilliant. He not only runs for himself, but also for his partner,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

His Scoring Rate Is More Than Run A Ball – Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar highlighted that despite playing risk-free shots, Virat Kohli’s strike rate is more than 100, which is better than Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Rohit Sharma. The cricketer-turned-commentator said that once Virat completes his ton, he starts accelerating and plays lofted shots after completing his ton.

“If you’ve seen Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Rohit Sharma’s batting, they take a slight risk. They try to hit sixes. Virat Kohli plays along the ground till his century and then only plays lofted shots. Despite playing risk-free shots, his scoring rate is more than run a ball, which is a good thing,” he added.

Virat Kohli will next play at home in a three-match ODI series against New Zealand, with the first match starting at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, on Wednesday, January 18.
