Shubman Gill showed his brilliant form in the recently concluded three-match series, where the Men in Blue whitewashed the three-match ODI series against the Black Caps 3-0. Former India selector Saba Karim praised Shubman Gill for his consistent performance and said that the youngster strengthened his case for selection for the upcoming ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 at home.
The 23-year-old has already scored 570 runs in ODIs in 2023, with his last six scores being 112, 40*, 208, 116, 21, and 70. He equalled Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s record for most runs in a three-match ODI series. The right-handed batter scored 360 runs at an average of 180, including two centuries against New Zealand. Earlier, Gill scored 207 runs in three ODIs against Sri Lanka at home.
We Are Witnessing Such A Skill After A Long Time – Saba Karim
Speaking on India News, Saba Karim said that Shubman Gill can carry forward the legacy of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and former Indian skipper Virat Kohli. The former Indian cricketer believes that Gill can become the backbone of the Indian batting lineup in the future. Karim feels that Gill has yet to prove himself in tough overseas conditions.
“The temperament is good. He can carry forward the legacy set by Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. The biggest test is overseas conditions. Gill’s track in England wasn’t that good when he played Tests. We hope that he becomes the backbone of Indian batting,” Saba Karim said.
“We are witnessing such a skill after a long time. In the future, we have to check how he performs against tough opponents. We have to test him in difficult conditions and quality pace bowlers, but the start has been phenomenal,” he added.
He Looks Mature With The Bat – Saba Karim
Shubman Gill was named Player of the Series and moved up to No. 6 in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for batters. Karim admired Shubman Gill’s batting style and said that the Punjab batter looks like a mature batsman.
“There are a lot of things about Shubman Gill’s batting. He looks mature with the bat. By maturity, I mean game awareness, reading the game, playing different shots against bowlers, focusing on shot selection, how to run the scoreboard and complementing the partner when needed.”
Shubman Gill will next be seen in action in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, with the first T20I scheduled to be played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, on Friday, January 27.
