The 23-year-old India National Cricket Team spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has come out in defense of the young left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh after his poor bowling show in the T20I series opener against New Zealand National Cricket Team at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, January 27.

Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable day in the first T20I against New Zealand. Throughout his 4-over spell, the left-arm seamer looked low on confidence.

In his first two overs in the powerplay, Arshdeep Singh conceded 22 runs. He then came to bowl the death overs. In the 18th over of the innings, the left-arm seamer picked up the huge wicket of Devon Conway and conceded just 2 runs.

However, it was the 20th over that turned out to be a nightmare for the pacer as he got smashed by Daryl Mitchell for 27 runs. Overall, he had the figures of 4-0-51-1 in the match.

Meanwhile, Washington Sundar, who performed exceptionally well for India both in the bowling and batting department, defended his teammate Arshdeep.

He (Arshdeep) has taken so many wickets — for India and in the IPL. We are also human beings, we also want to play the sport. When the competition is very high, and the opposition is of the highest quality such things can happen,” Washington said during a post-match media interaction on Friday.

The young all-rounder further spoke about express pacer Umran Malik, who bowled just one over in the Ranchi T20I and leaked 16 runs. Sundar lauded Umran and said that he is an X-factor.

“The way he (Malik) bowled against Sri Lanka and New Zealand (in ODIs) that’s why we all know he’s here. He’s an X-factor, someone, who bowls above 150 consistently and that’s a rare quality,” Washington said.

New Zealand National Cricket Team defeated India National Cricket Team by 21 runs in the first T20I match to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The second T20I will be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, January 29.
