Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer believes that the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan will have to take up some more responsibility in the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand National Cricket Team.

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli have been in red-hot form and their performances have helped India seal the deal in the ongoing home season. However, Jaffer feels that batters other than Kohli and Gill need to step up and take some responsibility.

Jaffer said that Rohit, Suryakumar and Kishan will have to perform well in the remainder of the series against New Zealand. He also said that Rohit should focus on converting his good start into a triple-figure mark.

“The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan will have to take some of the responsibility. It has been a while since Rohit Sharma last scored an ODI hundred. Even though he is batting pretty well, but we are not getting to see a triple-figure mark,” Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo.

Rohit Sharma, who is regarded as a modern-day batting great, has not smashed a century in international cricket for a long period of time. His last ODI ton came in January 2020 against Australia, his last Test century came against England in September 2021 and his last T20I hundred came way back in 2018 against the West Indies.

Notably, Suryakumar and Kishan are not first-choice players in the ODI playing XI and they are playing just because Shreyas Iyer is out with an injury and KL Rahul is unavailable for the series.

I think Rohit Sharma is looking to make the most of the conditions by batting first – Wasim Jaffer

Jaffer further said that India are looking to make the most of the conditions while batting first and they have been successfully posting huge totals on the board. He elaborated:

“I think Rohit Sharma is looking to make the most of the conditions by batting first. The best time to bat is usually during the day because we have seen in the T20I and the ODI series that there is a little help for bowlers under the lights when the sun sets.

“So, India might be looking to put the opposition under pressure by posting a big score when the conditions are ideal for batting. To their credit, they have been successful at it so far, scoring over 350 on a consistent basis.”

The 44-year-old also said that he won’t be surprised if the modern-day batting great Kohli once again plays an astonishing knock for India in the second ODI against New Zealand. He said:

“Virat Kohli has shunned the law of average several times in the past. When he starts scoring runs, the law of averages goes on the back foot. I won’t be surprised if we see another big innings from him, but the other batters will have to definitely step up.”
