Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India, eventually broke his century drought versus New Zealand in the third One-Day International. The series was won by India by 90 runs thanks to Rohit’s century, which also led to a 3-0 series victory.

However, the captain wasn’t too pleased that the host broadcaster Star Sports had listed his century as the first in three years. At the post-game news conference, Rohit became clearly agitated by the question and criticised the announcer for failing to contextualise the facts and for not presenting the “right things.”

The Broadcaster Should Know The Right Things: Rohit Sharma

When a reporter questioned Rohit about the three-year gap between his 29th and 30th tonnes in the 50-over format, the last time he struck an ODI century was against Australia in 2020, he became irritated.

Rohit responded to the query on Jasprit Bumrah and described how he was doing. “Regarding the first hundred in three years, I’ve played only 12 ODIs in three years, so three years sounds a lot..”

When the journalist became defensive and claimed that he wasn’t being judgmental of him with that question, Rohit continued to criticise the broadcaster.

The skipper added, “You guys should know what’s happening. I know that it was shown on the broadcast, sometimes, you (the broadcasters) need to show the right things also. The last entire year, we didn’t play ODI cricket, we focused on T20 cricket a lot. So, sometimes, people should keep things in mind…the broadcasters should show the right things.”

Prior to the six games in 2023, Rohit played just 11 ODIs in two years (three in 2021 and eight in 2022) after the century in 2020. Rohit started all five of the games against Sri Lanka and New Zealand but failed to get a significant point. He did, however, ultimately get there.

The skipper still had work to do. The 35-year-old yelled at the reporter when asked if the innings marked Rohit Sharma’s “great return” and replied, “What sort of a comeback? I didn’t get it. Oh, someone must’ve told you! See, of those last three years, for eight months (in 2020), everyone was home. Where were the matches? Last year, we played only T20 cricket.

In T20 cricket these days, no one is batting better than Suryakumar Yadav. He has scored 2 hundreds (in T20Is), and I don’t think anyone else has scored a century. Regarding Tests, I’ve played just 2 matches, against Sri Lanka (last year), while I was injured in between. So, you see all this before making your news.”

Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Shardul Thakur all had brief appearances to help India to a solid total of 385 runs, which ultimately proved to be sufficient for the Men in Blue to capture the Indore ODI. Rohit’s century came after his opening partner Shubman Gill also reached a century.
