Awesome Wicketkeper-Captain! Alec Stewart is a former England skipper and wicketkeeper who played for the national team in the 1990s and early 2000s. He played more than 100 Tests and 150 ODIs for England during his career.
Alec Stewart was a right-handed batsman and a wicketkeeper. He used to play as an opener and was one of the most aggressive openers to ever play for the England national cricket team. He piled up more than 13,000 runs in international cricket.
Family and Personal Life
Nicknamed as The Gaffer by teammates, Alec Stewart was born in Melton Park in England to Micky and Sheila Stewart on April 8, 1963. He grew up with his brother Neil and sister Judy.
Notably, his father Micky Stewart was a successful first-class cricket for England and represented Surrey County. Alex married Lynn and the couple has a son Andrew and daughter Emily.
Early and Domestic Career
As an aggressive opener and wicketkeeper, Alec got his domestic break in 1981 when he was picked by Surrey. He went on to play for the same domestic team till 2003. After 8 years of consistent show in the domestic circuit, he was picked by the national team in 1989.
International Career
Alex Stewart made his international debut in October 1989 with an ODI game against Sri Lanka in India. He went on to play for the side for 15 years till 2003, playing as an opener and wicketkeeper. He also led the England national team.
During his career, Stewart played 133 Tests and 170 ODIs for his nation. In 235 innings in the red-ball format, he added 8463 runs at 39+ batting average. In 162 ODI innings, he slammed 4677 runs at 31+ average.
He also shattered 15 tons in Tests and 4 in ODIs as well as 73 fifties in both formats. Since he retired in 2003, Alec Stewart never played any T20I game for England or featured in franchise T20I leagues.
Post Retirement
Alec Stewart was a prominent figure after his retirement as well. He held many reputed roles as a coach and support staff with the Surrey Domestic team of England. He was also the director of the club in 2023-2024.
