“Brave opener and courageous captain- these words can surely define Babar Azam, who is one of the best batters to ever play for Pakistan. Babar Azam is also the only Pakistan captain to win a match against India in ICC World Cups.
Babar Azam is a right-handed batsman for Pakistan. He plays in the top order. He plays as an opener in T20Is and one-down in ODIs and Tests.
The Pakistan stalwart has broken multiple records of Indian legend Virat Kohli, which has often led to Babar Azam vs Virat Kohli debate among fans from both countries. At the age of 29, he has already played more the 100 games in ODIs and T20Is for Pakistan.
Personal Life and Early Career
Babar Azam was born in Lahore City, Pakistan on October 15, 1990. His father Azam Siddique always supported his cricket career. He grew up with his two brothers- Safeer Azam and Faisal Azam. He is the cousin of former Pakistan cricketers- Adnan Akman, Kamran Akmal, and Umar Akmal.
Mansoor Hameed was his childhood coach and trained him under his guidance in his early career. Babar Azam was part of Islamabad Leopards in his domestic career.
International Career
In 2015, he made his international debut with an ODI encounter against Zimbabwe. Next year, he made his Test and T20I debut. He was also part of the Pakistan team that won the Champions Trophy 2017 by defeating India.
The right-hander has shattered over 13000 runs in international cricket as of 2024. He has also smacked 31 centuries and 94 half-centuries with an average of 40+ in Tests and T20Is. In ODIs, he carries a 55+ average.
Franchise League Career
Since Pakistan's players were banned long before Babar Azam came into the picture, Azam has never played in the Indian Premier League. However, he is quite active in Foreign Franchise Leagues like Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, and Caribbean Premier League.
He has played for teams like Guyana Amazon Warriors, Rangpur Riders, and Peshawar Zalmi since 2020. In Pakistan Super League, he has been part of Peshawar Zalmi since 2023.
The Pakistan skipper has earned many ICC accolades to date. He was ODI and T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2017. In 2021, he was named as captain of Best ODI and T20 Team of the Year. He also won the ICC Cricketer Of The Year 2022 Award.
