Gautam Gambhir is a left-handed batsman who played for Team India as an opener. He was a full-time opener but also played a one-down position under skipper MS Dhoni.
He was part of the Indian Team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and T20 World Cup 2007. He is the current Head Coach of the Indian Team.
Family and Personal Life
Gambhir was born on October 14, 1981, in New Delhi to parents Deepak and Seema Gambhir. He grew up in Delhi with his younger sister Seema Gambhir.
He married Natasha Jain in 2011 and has two daughters- Aazeen and Anaiza. He was interested in playing badminton, meditation, yoga, and music during his childhood.
Early and Domestic Career
Gautam Gambhir started his early career in cricket under three coaches- Sanjay Bharadwaj, Raju Tondon, and Naveen Chopra.
They helped him to develop his batting skills. He became a member of the Delhi Team in the domestic circuit in 1999 and represented the same side till 2018.
International Career
Gautam Gambhir made his debut for Team India in 2003 and played for the side till 2016. He played under skippers Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Virender Sehwag during his entire career and donned the role of vice-captain of Team India for quite some time.
He made his debut against Bangladesh in an ODI in April 2003. He went on to play 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is for India and slammed a lot of runs for the national side.
He mustered 4154 runs in 104 Test innings with 9 tons and 22 fifties. He also slammed a double century of 206. In ODIs, he shattered 5238 runs with 11 centuries and 34 half-centuries averaging 39+. In the shortest format, he smacked 932 runs with 7 fifties.
Franchise Career
Gautam Gambhir played for only two teams during his entire IPL career. He was part of Delhi Capitals from 2008 to 2010 and retired from IPL after playing for the same side in the 2018 edition.
He led Kolkata Knight Riders to titles in the 2012 and 2014 seasons; and was part of the team from 2011 to 2017.
He was the mentor of many teams after his retirement and also led KKR to the title of mentor in IPL 2024. Under his guidance, KKR emerged as the most dominating team in the tournament.
Post Retirement
Gambhir bid goodbye to all forms of cricket in March 2019. He entered politics after he retired from all forms of cricket in 2019.
He became an MP from East Delhi for the ruling BJP Govt and also executed many works to help to poor from his cricket salary.
He was also an active commentator. He won the Padma Shri and Arjuna Awards for his contribution to the nation as a cricketer. Now, he is the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team after succeeding Rahul Dravid.
