Marvellous Opener! These two words truly describe Matthew Hayden's complete cricket career across all formats. Matthew Hayden was the Mayhem Man for Australia who helped the team to dominate in the early 2000s as an opener.
He was the permanent opener with Adam Gilchrist for the Ricky Ponting-led Australia- who were considered unbeatable. He was a left-handed batsman who only batted as an opener in all formats.
Early and Personal Life
Matthew Hayden was born in October 1971 in Queensland Australia to Laurie Hayden and Moya Hayden. He had two siblings and grew up with them in Queensland.
Matthew Hayden is a former Aussie opener who made his debut in May 1993 and played for the national team till 2009, when he retired from all forms of cricket. He was later active in franchise T20I leagues. The left-handed batsman is considered one of the best and dangerous openers in international cricket.
Domestic Career
Matthew Hayden was part of Queensland since his debut edition in international cricket and was part of them throughout his career. He joined the domestic side in 1991 and played for the same side till his retirement in 2008.
International Career
Matthew Hayden made his international debut in May 1993 with an ODI against England. As an opener, he slammed 29 runs in the match but set up an opening stand of 60 with partner Mark Taylor.
Later, the hard-hitting opener also made his Test debut next year against a Test against South Africa. When the T20I trend commenced after the 2000s, the left-handed made his debut against England in 2005.
Like every other veteran of this decade, Hayden did not play a lot of T20I games as he was only part of the shortest format at the start. However, he went on to play 103 ODIs and 161 T20Is for Australia.
Smacking more than 8000-plus runs in Tests and 6000-plus runs in ODIs, he is touted as one of the best batters of unbeaten Aussies of the early 2000s.
Franchise Career
Matthew Hayden was quite active in his franchise career. He was active in Indian Premier League where he played for Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010. He was also part of Big Bash League franchise Brisbane Heat in 2011. However, he was more popular for his role as an aggressive batter for CSK.
Legacy
Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist were like the right and left hands of legendary skipper Ricky Ponting. Both of them had a big hand in leading the Australian team to three consecutive titles in ODI World Cups- in 1999, 2003, and 2007.
Undoubtedly, they are the best set of left-handed openers in international cricket. Their opening stand is still a nightmare for many teams in international cricket.
