Dominating and Brave skipper! Perhaps these words can define Sourav Ganguly's tenure in Indian cricket. He was always dubbed as a powerful opener and skipper who led the Indian team to the final in the ICC ODI World Cup 2003.
Sourav Ganguly is a former Indian skipper who dominated in the first decade after the 2000s. The left-handed batsman played many games as an opener with Sachin Tendulkar and their pair was the best set of openers. Ganguly also worked as the BCCI chief after his career and spent two terms in the post.
Personal Life
Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972, in Calcutta City in West Bengal to mother Nirupa Ganguly and father Chandidas Ganguly. He grew up with his brother Snehasish. He completed his education at St Xaviers Collegiate School in Kolkata. Sourav Ganguly married Dona and has a daughter Sana.
Childhood and Domestic Career
Ganguly trained under childhood coaches BD Desai, VS Marshall Patil, and Hemu Adhikari in his early years. His domestic team was Bengal, for which he played from 1990-2010 till his retirement.
International Career
Sourav Ganguly made his Test debut in January 1996 in a match against England. He went on to play 133 Tests during his career smacking over 7000 runs. He made his ODI debut in January 1992 in a clash against West Indies.
He played ODIs till 2007. He went on to play a total of 311 matches for India and slammed over 11000 runs. He never played any T20I games but featured in 59 games in Indian Premier League.
Franchise Career
Sourav Ganguly was quite active in the Indian Premier League and played for only two teams. He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders from 2008 to 2010. Later, he also played for Pune Warriors India from 2011 to 2012.
Legacy
Sourav Ganguly will always remembered as a legend who was seen on the field with Sachin Tendulkar. The duo made many historic partnerships during the 90s and early 20s. Also, Ganguly was the first captain to lead Team India to the ODI World Cup final in 2003. He also donned the tag of BCCI chief.
