Pakistani batsman and Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam smashed a brilliant century during the Pakistan Super League 2024 match against Islamabad United. Babar played an innings of 111* runs from 63 balls and smashed 14 fours and 2 sixes during his stay at the crease. Babar’s fans had been waiting for the century for a long time but the former Pakistani captain wasn’t able to convert his starts into a big score.
Babar Azam‘s mother had also come to witness the match and the batter believed that she proved to be lucky for him. Babar added that his mother came to witness her match for the first time and she was very happy with his knock.

Babar Azam said as quoted by Geo News, “My mother came [to watch] for the first time. She’s very happy. She enjoyed it. She always watches at home but she proved to be [a source of] good luck for me. She came to watch the match and I scored a hundred.”
Babar Azam’s knock helped Peshawar Zalmi put up a score of 201/5 wherein Saim Ayub also played an innings of 38 runs while opening the innings with Babar. Ayub smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes during his stay at the crease. Shadab Khan picked up 2 wickets for Islamabad United whereas Naseem Shah and Agha Salman picked up 1 wicket each.
Chasing down the target, Islamabad United were only able to score 193/9 and ended up falling short of the target. Colin Munro and Azam Khan played innings of 71 and 75 runs respectively. Arif Yaqoob picked up a five-wicket haul whereas Saim Ayub, Luke Wood, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Salman Irshad picked up 1 wicket each.
Babar Azam had to resign as the captain of Pakistan after his terrible form with the bat in the year 2023. The right-handed batter who is currently the number one ranked ODI batsman, wasn’t able to score runs against quality attacks such as India, Australia, and England whereas, he scored centuries against low-ranked teams such as Nepal and Zimbabwe.
Babar Azam also failed to score runs during the ODI World Cup 2023 which resulted in Pakistan’s early exclusion from the tournament. During last year’s World Cup and Test series against Australia, the former Pakistan captain struggled to find form. During the ICC event, the right-handed batter scored 320 runs at an 82.90 strike rate.
After Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament, Babar stepped down as captain of all formats, with Shaheen Afridi taking over as T20I captain. However, in the first three games of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, Babar showed signs of regaining his form.
Babar Azam’s woes with the bat continued during the Test series against Australia and the batter failed to score runs with the bat once again. Pakistan ended up losing the three-match series by 3-0.
Against the Kiwis, the seasoned batter scored 57, 66, and 58. Overall, he scored 213 runs in the series, averaging 42.6. However, the batter wasn’t able to finish games for his team and they ended up losing the five-match series by 4-1.
