Former Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan’s commentary on the PSL 2024 match between the Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators have been making the rounds on social media.

The Karachi Kings lost their first game at home against Querta Gladiators in the Karachi leg of the tournament. The Gladiators won the match by five wickets chasing 166 for victory. Sherfane Rutherford won the match with the bat with a last-ball four.

Quetta Gladiators won the match as they chased down 15 in the last over with Rutherford finishing with an unbeaten 58 off 31 deliveries. He and Akeal Hosein added an unbeaten 80-run stand which turned out to be a match-winning one in the end.

Rutherford hit two back-to-back sixes to bring down the equation to three for three balls. Then it came down to one from one and the southpaw hit a four in the final ball to win the match for Quetta. The Gladiators now are placed second in the points table with four wins from five games.

Karachi Kings are now placed fifth with two wins from five matches. Defending champions Lahore Qalandar is languishing at the bottom of the points table with six losses from as many games.

Comparisons between the IPL and the PSL have been prevalent in the game ever since the advent of the Pakistan Super League in 2016. The IPL started way back in 2008 and the rest of the leagues across the globe based themselves on the IPL.

While the Pakistan cricketers have put PSL before IPL since the Indian government banned the participation of Pakistan players, the truth is that IPL is way ahead in terms of popularity than the PSL.

Bazid Khan’s recent comments on empty stands once again highlight the status of the league in the country of Pakistan. On the other hand, the craze of the Indian fans about the IPL is something very different. The support and the fan following the various franchises enjoy is something unreal.

The match between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators started on the worst possible note. 13 players of the Karachi franchise were infected by food poisoning before the start of the match.

One of the players who was a bit more critical was hospitalized before the start of the game. The management had difficulties in figuring out the XI but they somehow fielded an XI and ultimately lost the match.

Quetta Gladiators skipper Rilee Rossouw hailed Rutherford and Hosein in his post-match comment. They two shared an unbeaten stand and played a big part in taking the team up on the points table.

“It’s a great game of cricket, and what an innings by Rutherford and Akeal as well. A serious game of cricket. We sat down before the start of the season and spoke about the values we want to have as a team and everyone brought in the idea of how we want to approach this season. We chased it on a tricky wicket and games like these will add more positivity to the group” said Rilee Rossouw after Quetta’s win.
