Ranji Trophy Cricket Teams
Ranji Trophy is the premier first-class tournament of India and is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament was founded in the year 1934 and the first edition was played in the 1934-35 season. Madras and Mysore played the first-ever Ranji Trophy game on 4 November 1934 in Madras (now Chennai).
Talking about the Ranji Trophy teams, state and regional sides with first-class status play in the tournament. While most associations are regional, there are also some pan-Indian association such as the Railways and Services. Railways represent Indian railways while the Services represent the Indian armed forces.
At present, 38 teams participate in the Ranji Trophy. In the 2024-25 edition of the tournament, 32 of the 38 Ranji Trophy teams will feature in the Elite Divison while six will play in the Plate league.
All the 28 states of India and four of the eight union territories participate in the first-class tournament. In addition, four teams representing region within the states also participate in the Ranji Trophy. The four teams are - Mumbai and Vidarbha (both within Maharashtra) and Saurashtra and Baroda (both within Gujarat).
The 38 teams are - Baroda, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mumbai, Odisha, Services, Tripura, Andhra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha, Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi , Jharkhand, Railways, Tamil Nadu, Saurashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim.
