Mitchell Starc, an Australian fast bowler, injured his finger playing in the field on the first day of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, placing him in grave danger for the third Test against South Africa in Sydney.

During the day one middle session, Starc attempted to take a catch at long-on and dislocated the tip of his middle finger on his left hand, his bowling hand.

For medical attention, Starc departed the field right away. He later made his way back to the field to conclude South Africa’s first innings after taking a quick bowl in the nets behind the MCG, but he was not asked to bowl.

The management of the Australian team stated on the second morning that Starc had been given the go-ahead to play in the game, and he batted in the nets before play. However, according to the CA, his “condition will be reviewed at the conclusion of the match,” and the details of the scan’s overnight results were not provided.

Mitchell  Starc is not expected to bowl in the second innings in Melbourne:

Two additional fast bowlers from Australia are on the team. In the nets on the second morning at the MCG, Josh Hazlewood and Lance Morris each had a bowl. Morris was called up ahead of the Adelaide Test against the West Indies as specific support for Starc, who has been Australia’s most dependable fast bowler and has played in the last 18 straight Tests after being chosen for just one of the five Tests in the 2019 Ashes.

Starc is not expected to bowl in the second innings in Melbourne.

“Cricket Australia says he’s been cleared to continue this Test, however, there are serious doubts as to whether he’ll bowl in the second innings,” Kath Loughnan said on the Fox Cricket broadcast.

“We are hearing he’s done a fair bit of damage to the extent where he could be out for some time and miss the Sydney Test, due to potential tendon damage.

“But the official line from Cricket Australia is he has simply hurt the tip of his middle finger, and his condition will be reassessed at the conclusion of this match,” Kath Loughnan added.

Starc would become the third Australian fast bowler to miss a match this summer due to injury.
