IND vs SA: He Hasn't Learned – Sunil Gavaskar Lashes Out At Rishabh Pant For His Shot Selection In 4th T20I vs South Africa

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at India captain Rishabh Pant after his third consecutive failure in the five-match T20I series against South Africa at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Friday, June 17.

Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who was appointed as India’s captain for the home T20I series against South Africa in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, batted very well in the first game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as he smashed quick 29 runs.

However, in the second match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, he scored just 5 runs and in the third match at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, Pant scored just 6 runs.

In the fourth match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, he got out after scoring just 17 runs off 23 balls, including 2 fours. Also, he got out for the third time in the series in a similar fashion while chasing the delivery wide outside-off, as he attempted to clear the fence.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar slammed Pant for his shot selection and said that the wicketkeeper-batsman has not learned from his previous dismissals.

“He hasn’t learned. He hasn’t learned from his previous three dismissals. They throw wide, and he keeps going for it. He can’t throw enough muscle on that. He has got to stop looking to go aerial that far outside the off-stump,” said Gavaskar during his commentary stint on Star Sports.

The batting legend added that South Africa always plan to bowl Pant outside the off stump and the wicketkeeper-batsman gets dismissed.

“There is no way he’s going to get enough on it. It has gone to short-third! They all plan it, South African bowlers and Temba Bavuma… just bowl wide outside the off-stump and you will get him,” he added.

He added that India’s captain getting out in a similar fashion several times that too in the same series is not a good sign.

“10 times, he has been dismissed wide outside off-stump (in T20s in 2022). Some of them would’ve been called wide if he hadn’t made contact with it. Because he’s so far away, he has to reach out for it. He will never get enough power on it. To keep getting out in the same series in the same manner, for a captain of the Indian team, that’s not a good sign,” said Gavaskar.
