A player’s decision to retire is always their own, however, some seniors may reconsider after a major competition, especially if their favorite team didn’t advance, and make room for younger players.

The West Indies and the United States will host the following T20 World Cup in 2024, two years from now. During this time, the Indian squad may go through a transitional period in the shortest format.

In the month of January 2023, Team India and Sri Lanka will play three ODIs and as many T20Is. The Men in Blue traveled to Bangladesh to play a white-ball ODI series followed by a Test series after the New Zealand trip, which included three T20Is (won by India 1-0) and three ODIs (won by New Zealand 1-0).

Sri Lanka previously toured India in February 2022. In February–March 2022, the Sri Lankan squad faced off against India in a multi-format series. In every aspect of the game, the Indians dominated the visitors. Both the T20I and Test series were won by India, 2-0.

After the Sri Lanka limited overs, the T20I series is over, and Virat Kohli could stop playing T20Is. He might also skip the 2024 T20 World Cup in order to concentrate on the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 34-year-old run machine has played in 115 T20Is and accumulated 4008 runs at an average of 52.74. He is the player with the most runs scored in this format and the only one with more than 4000 T20I runs to date.

He could soon quit after accomplishing all in T20Is to focus on ODIs and Tests. He accumulated 276 runs in 5 T20Is at an average of 92, including his first T20I tonne (122*) against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022. He scored 296 runs in 6 T20Is, averaged 98.67, and was the top run-getter in the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Ravichandran Ashwin, a seasoned off-spinner, is a terrific red-ball bowler but his white-ball career has been in decline for a while. Due to his extensive experience, he was selected for this year’s World Cup team; nonetheless, he was one of the Indian bowling lineup’s weakest links.

Remember that he was the slowest player on the entire squad, and his level of fitness is just insufficient to face the demands of T20Is. He is already 36 and won’t get any younger, therefore it would be no surprise if he stopped playing T20 international cricket and concentrated on the format that fits him the best.

Rohit Sharma

If chosen for the Sri Lanka T20Is, Rohit Sharma, who has accumulated 3853 runs in 148 T20Is at an average of 31.33, may call it quits in the shortest format. He shares a number of T20I records with Virat Kohli, including the most hundreds in T20Is (4), the most T20I matches (148), and the second-highest lifetime runs (3853).

He was unable to motivate his Australian troops. In fact, one of the reasons the Indian team struggled to produce respectable totals inside the powerplay was because of his cautious attitude. His physical condition is already subpar and will get worse over the next few years.

Hence, It won’t be a surprise if he departs from T20Is to focus on Tests and ODIs.
