Legendary Australia National Cricket Team speedster Brett Lee believes that the 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan should be India’s first-choice opener at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held in India.
The 37-year-old left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been the permanent opener of the Indian team in ODIs for an extended period, but he has been struggling with his form in recent times.

Also, with the emergence of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, many cricket pundits have called for the exclusion of Dhawan from the team. Both Gill and Kishan have performed brilliantly in the limited opportunities they have got and people want captain Rohit to open the innings with one of the youngsters at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
In a video shared on his official YouTube channel, Brett Lee said that Ishan Kishan should be the sure-shot opener for India at the World Cup if he maintains his consistency and stays fit.

“With this deadly double, Ishan has staked a strong claim to open for India in the ODI World Cup at home in 2023. Will this happen? I don’t know. Should it happen? Hell yeah, it should. The guy just scored the fastest 200 in ODI history. But if he can show consistency, stay fit, and be around the next few months, he should be a sure-shot opener for India at the World Cup,” Lee said on his official YouTube channel.
“Back Ishan to make it in the World Cup squad with an eye on the future and clearly, he would be on a high after that knock as he should be. However, a word of caution. Too much praise had led to cobwebs in the head.
“So my advice to Ishan Kishan would be… forget about the milestone, forget about the double hundred as soon as you can. There are bigger milestones to achieve, higher peaks to scale. Ishan Kishan has to forget about the euphoria of his double hundred. Just focus on the process stay fit and keep smashing big runs.”
What we saw just a few days ago from Ishan Kishan was truly amazing – Brett Lee on Kishan’s double century
In the third ODI of the three-match series against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Saturday, December 10, Ishan Kishan replaced Rohit Sharma in the playing XI, who got ruled out of the match due to a thumb injury.
Kishan played a spectacular knock in the match to help India post a humongous total of 409/8 on the board. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed 210 runs off 131 balls, including 24 fours and 10 sixes, and he also stitched up an amazing 290-run partnership in just 190 deliveries with Virat Kohli.
Reacting to Kishan’s double century, pace-bowling great Brett Lee said that the wicketkeeper-batter displayed unbelievable batting and could have even registered the triple century, had he not been dismissed in the 36th over.
“I am a little late in reacting to this but as they say… better late than never. What we saw just a few days ago from Ishan Kishan was truly amazing. Bangladesh had no answer. The fastest double-hundred in ODI history, that’s right. 210 runs off just 132 balls… 24 fours and 10 massive sixes.
“A ferocious knock with shots all around the dial. Unbelievable batting, he could have easily got a triple hundred as well. It helped that he had the master Virat Kohli at the other end. What I loved about the innings was not just Ishan Kishan’s shot-making but Kohli’s reaction when Ishan ran the 200th run. What a great spirit and camaraderie between the two,” mentioned Lee.
