Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that the promotion of Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the white-ball teams is not a “bad option”.
On December 27, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s white-ball squads for the home series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya was named the captain of the T20I team and vice-captain of the ODI team. Notably, the premier all-rounder replaced KL Rahul as the permanent vice-captain of the white-ball setup.

Meanwhile, Gambhir was questioned about KL Rahul’s place in India’s white-ball teams with Hardik’s promotion to vice-captaincy. He said on Star Sports:
“Promoting Hardik as vice-captain is not a bad option. But we will have to wait and watch whether once Rohit Sharma comes back in the T20 format whether Hardik will still captain the side.”

Judging Rohit Sharma by just one ICC tournament is not the parameter for us to judge him – Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir added that judging captain Rohit on the basis of one ICC tournament – ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 – is not the correct parameter. While talking about Rahul, the former opening batsman Gambhir said that the LSG captain will find it difficult to make it to the scheme of things. He said:
“Because judging Rohit Sharma by just one ICC tournament is not the parameter for us to judge him. But we’ll have to wait and watch. Probably KL Rahul might find it difficult to actually make it in the scheme of things because with the kind of form Ishan Kishan is in.”

The Sri Lanka tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The T20Is will be played on January 3, 5, and 7 in Mumbai, Pune, and Rajkot respectively. The ODIs will be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.
