Before scoring their individual fifties in their 143-run stand, both players overcame very near lbw scares. Even Virat Kohli in the Indian dugout was surprised by Rohit’s survival in the 11th over and Gill’s in the 17th.
It took place not long after the starters scored a 100-run stand. A flatter ball was bowled around off by 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. As the ball struck Gill’s stumps, he was outplayed defensively. Immediately, Sri Lanka made a strong appeal, but the umpire rejected it.

Captain Dasun Shanaka then had a brief conversation with the wicketkeeper before going up for a review. The ball was slamming into the stumps, but because the hit was outside off, Gill survived a very close call, a decision that had stunned Virat Kohli, who was all padded up and ready to step in if the judgment had gone the other way.

Gill got his fifth ODI fifty in 51 balls three deliveries later, and an over later took on Wellalage to strike a hat-trick of boundaries. He ultimately scored but was out by lbw after Shanaka’s ball smacked him square on the leg stump. He shot a 60-ball 70 with 11 boundaries.
A few more overs later, Dilshan Madushanka, who was making his debut, struck as Rohit chopped the outside-off delivery. He left the field having hit nine boundaries and three sixes for 83 runs in 67 balls.
