Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss, opted to bowl first in the match and handed a maiden ODI cap to pace bowler Dilshan Madushanka. Also, the Lankan Lions made just one change to the side that played the third T20I by including young all-rounder Dunith Wellalage in place of Maheesh Theekshana.

On the other hand, India had no place for in-form Suryakumar Yadav and double-centurion Ishan Kishan in the team. They fielded a combination of 3 pacers, one leg-spinner and two all-rounders.

India’s new opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided the side with an excellent start in the match. After 10 overs, India were at 75 at the loss of no wicket. The opening duo completed 100 runs partnership in 89 balls.

Captain Dasun Shanaka provided the first breakthrough to his side by dismissing the talented opener Shubman Gill in the 20th over. Gill scored outstanding 70 runs off 60 balls, with 11 fours, and he also had a 143-run partnership in 118 balls with the Indian skipper.

Rohit Sharma also failed to register a well-deserved century after getting off to a flying start as he was sent back by debutant Dilshan Madushanka in the 24th over. The 35-year-old played an attacking brand of cricket and smashed brilliant 83 runs off 67 balls, with 9 fours and 3 sixes.

Then, Virat Kohli played a scintillating knock and registered his 45th ton in 50-over cricket and overall 73rd century in international cricket. Kohli scored 113 runs off 87 balls, with 12 fours and 1 six, before being dismissed by Kasun Rajitha in the 49th over.

In addition to the top 3, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer made significant contributions with the bat in the middle overs to power India to a mammoth 373/7. Talking about the Lankan bowlers, they had a terrible day as all seven bowling options leaked runs at an economy of over 6.50. Kasun Rajitha, the most successful bowler, conceded 88 runs and dismissed three Indian batters.

Defending a humongous total, Siraj provided India with a terrific start in the match. He cleaned up Avishka Fernando for 5 in the 4th over and then castled Mendis for a 4-ball duck in the 6th over.

Sri Lanka lost their third wicket at the score of 64 in the 14th over as Charith Asalanka was cleaned up by Umran Malik for 23. Then, Dhananjaya de Silva and Pathum Nissanka provided some stability to their side by stitching up a 72-run partnership in 65 balls.

Dhananjaya de Silva scored 47 runs off 40 balls, before being cleaned up by Mohammed Shami in the 25th over, and Pathum Nissanka scored 72 runs off 80 balls, before being dismissed by Umran Malik in the 31st over.

In the end, skipper Dasun Shanaka fought back exceptionally well and batted with great intent. Also, India’s inability to pick wickets in the end overs was on full display as the Lankans were allowed to go from 179/7 to 306/8 in 50 overs.

Dasun Shanaka registered his second ODI century and scored a sensational 108* runs off 88 balls, including 12 fours and 3 sixes. Also, he stitched together brilliant 100* runs in 73 balls with Kasun Rajitha, but the target seemed just too big to chase down.
