Ashes 2021-22: Alex Carey Breaks Rishabh Pant's Wicket-Keeping Record On Test Debut

Australia’s wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey has broken the record of India’s Rishabh Pant as he took eight catches on his Test debut. Carey became the first player to take eight catches on Test debut as he broke the joint highest catches of seven scalps made by Rishabh Pant, England’s Chris Read and Australia’s Brian Taber.

The wicket-keeper batsman took the catches of Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler and Ollie Robinson in the first innings on Wednesday. In the second innings, he took the catches of Haseeb Hameed, Rory Burns, Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes. Notably, South Africa’s Quinton De Kock took nine wickets as a keeper but he made his Test debut as a batsman which is why he couldn’t break the record of seven scalps on his Test debut.

Alex Carey Breaks Rishabh Pant’s Record

Apart from Carey, off-spinner Nathan Lyon also became the 17th globally and third Australian after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to take 400 wickets in the longest format. Lyon took the wicket of Dawid Malan, who was caught at silly point by Marnus Labuschagne. He also took the wickets of Ollie Pope and Ollie Robinson.

Meanwhile, England’s innings folded on 297 after starting the day on 220/2 with Joe Root and Malan on the crease. They couldn’t score centuries and the rest of the batsmen couldn’t even cross the 30-run mark. Australia needed to chase 20 runs to win and they chased the target with nine wickets in hand.

With this win, Australia have taken the lead of 1-0 in the five-match series. The next game with be played in Adelaide and it will be a day-night game starting from Thursday, December 16.
