The second Test of the Ashes 2021-22 starts tomorrow with the pink ball at Adelaide Oval Ground. Australia won the first Test comprehensively by 9 wickets at The Gabba in Brisbane. A combined effort from the Australian bowling unit led to England getting bowled out for just 147 runs in the first innings. The likes of Rory Burns and skipper Joe Root got out without opening their accounts. Four out of the top five batsmen got out on single-digit scores.

Ollie Pope (35 off 79) and Jos Buttler (39 off 58) showed some resistance but couldn’t score big knocks. Pat Cummins, who was playing the first match as full-time Test captain, starred with the ball. He picked five wickets for just 38 runs in 13.1 overs. The other two fast bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets each.

Australia didn’t put the foot off the pedal as they scored a gigantic 425 in the second innings to pile further pressure on England. David Warner rode his luck a few times and went on to score 94 off 176. He stitched a brilliant partnership with Marnus Labuschagne, who too contributed 74 off 117 deliveries. Later, Travis Head played a sensational knock of 152 runs off just 148 balls to leave England in all sorts of trouble.

England needed a brilliant opening partnership to start their second innings. But, unfortunately, they didn’t get one. Both the openers, Rory Burns (13 off 27) and Haseeb Hameed (27 off 58), went back to the hut inside the first 21 overs. David Malan (82 off 195) and Joe Root (89 off 165) then stitched a fighting 162-run partnership to reignite England’s hope.

However, once the duo got out, things went downhill for them. Wickets fell in a cluster and England saw themselves getting bowled out for 297 runs. Australia needed only 20 runs to chase down in the fourth innings and they did it with 9 wickets in hand.

The England Cricket Team have announced the 12-man squad for the second Test. Both James Anderson and Stuart Broad return, while Mark Wood has been dropped for the next game. For Australia, Josh Hazelwood misses out due to an injury. Jhye Richardson will replace him in the playing XI.
