Australia and England are set to take one each other in what will be the first Test of the Ashes Series 2021-22. The last Ashes series held in 2019 in England ended in a draw as both teams won two matches each.

However, when England visited Australia last time for 2017-18, they received a 4-0 thrashing. The fans would be hoping for a better performance from Joe Root and Co. in the upcoming series. Their recent form, however, doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

The openers have been inconsistent. The onus would be on Rory Burns if not the other ones at the top of the order. He has played some top knocks this year and certainly have the ability to replicate those in Australia. Having said that, it isn’t going to be easy facing the Australia pace attack in Australia. Joe Root is yet to score a century in Australia in Test Cricket.

But, keeping in mind his recent form, you expect him to score at least a couple. He has been in outstanding form and is definitely key to England’s fortunes in the series. Ben Stokes will be making his comeback after taking a break to take care of his mental health.

His return should be a big boost for England. Everyone knows what he can do with both bat and ball if gets into his rhythm. Jos Buttler made poor returns in the home Test series against India. The team certainly expects better performance from him given the kind of talent he is. How he performs while batting at the lower middle-order remains to be seen.

Interestingly, England have rested James Anderson in the first Test in order to have him fully fit for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. The likes of Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood are likely to form the pace attack.

Australia, on the other hand, are coming into the series with a new captain in Pat Cummins. The likes of David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne etc will be seen in whites after a very long time. The trio is going to be crucial to Australia’s fortune in the series.

Both Smith and Labuschagne did well in the last Ashes series in England and you expect them to perform even better in home conditions. Over the last few days, there has been debate over whether to play Mitchell Starc in the first Test, given the kind of form he is. However, Australia has stuck with the same pace attack, consisting of Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood. Nathan Lyon will remain the first-choice spinner in the attack.
