Joe Root Breaks Michael Vaughan's Record To Become Player With Most Test Runs For England In Calendar Year

England red-ball captain Joe Root has achieved yet another enormous milestone in his Test career, breaking the record of former captain Michael Vaughan to become the player with most test runs for England in a calendar year.

Root accomplished this milestone in the first Ashes 2021-22 Test against Australia at the Gabba, Brisbane. After getting out on duck in the first innings, he performed brilliantly in the second innings.

On Day 3 of the Gabba Test, Root went into tea with an unbeaten 26 levelling the runs mark with Vaughan and in the final session after the break, he pulled for a single to deep backward square leg off Nathan Lyon to bring up the milestone.

Meanwhile, on Day 3 Root smashed brilliantly 86* runs and at Stumps England were at 220/2 with Dawid Malan and Joe Root having a 159* runs partnership.

Joe Root Surpasses Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan had scored 1,481 runs at an average of 61.14 back in 2002, including six centuries and two half-centuries. Meanwhile, now the 30-year-old Root has 1541 runs in his bag at an average of 67.00. He has scored two half-centuries and six centuries including two double centuries at Galle and Chennai.

Root had a brilliant start in Tests in 2021 and in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka he scored 426 runs, then scored 386 runs in the 4-match Test series against India.

After that, he smashed 97 runs in the two-match Test series against New Zealand and then smashed 564 runs in the home Test series against India.

Overall, Root is sitting at the No.8 position in the list of players with most Test runs in a calendar year. Currently, Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf sits top of the list with 1788 runs at an average of 99.33 which he smashed in 2006.
