The Ashes 2021-22: Michael Vaughan Expresses Disappointment Over England's Performance On Day 2 Of Adelaide Test
Former England captain Michael Vaughan reckons the England team hasn’t clicked in unison and everything has gone wrong for them in the tour. However, he also said it has been a long-standing problem for Joe Root and co. and nothing is being done to fix it.
On Day 2 of the Adelaide Test, England’s planning with the ball didn’t work out and they were sent on a leather hunt by the Aussies. With an hour left to go, Steve Smith declared with a first-innings total of 473/9. Batting under the lights, Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed were sent back cheaply.
Luckily for the Englishmen, the weather gods were on their side as rain intervened and brought the day’s play to a halt with plenty of overs left. With three days to go, however, they need to get out of the hole they’ve dug themselves into.
Here’s what Michael Vaughan had to say:
“12 for 2 & the skipper has to walk out again far too early… Pretty much every aspect of this Test team isn’t working so far on this tour… but let’s be honest it’s been the same story for a long time against the better teams… #Ashes.”
Vaughan also questioned the need to go for bouncers with a new ball. The pink ball is expected to move around a fair bit and with swing bowlers in the armory, going for a short-ball ploy was quite the wrong call.
“I just don’t get it… the best bowler has been Ollie Robinson who has bowled fuller and has looked like getting wickets!!!!! So why go to the short ball theory… the ball is still hard… !!! #Ashes,” Vaughan mentioned.
England ended Day 2 on 17/2 with Joe Root and Dawid Malan at the crease. They trail Australia by 456 runs with nine sessions to go in the Test.
