Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman congratulated Australian off-spinner, Nathan Lyon after the latter claimed 400 international Test wickets during the first Ashes Test against England at the Gabba on Saturday.

Lyon’s 399th wicket had come in India’s tour of Australia earlier this year. He finally reached the milestone when he dismissed Dawid Malan in the 74th over of England’s second innings. Lyon went on to take three more wickets to help restrict England to 297.

Australia then chased the target of 20 down with no fuss as they went ahead by a 1-0 margin in the 5-match Test series. It also continued their streak at the Gabba against England.

Here’s VVS Laxman’s congratulatory tweet:

A huge congratulations to Nathan Lyon on his 400th test wicket. He’s been a terrific bowler with exceptional skills. He becomes the 17th player to achieve the milestone in men’s Test cricket, joining Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath as the only other Australian players. #Ashes.

Travis Head was awarded the Man of the Match award for his stunning 152-run knock in Australia’s first innings of 425. He came in at a time when England’s tail was up and the Aussies were being gunned down by Ollie Robinson and co.

Head took a liking to Jack Leach, the visitors’ sole spinner in the side, and ensured that the left-armer would endure a torrid time with the ball. Leach ended the innings with horrible figures of 1/102 in just 13 overs.

Pat Cummins’ stint as the new Test captain couldn’t have gotten off to a better start – both with respect to his bowling and team performance. He picked a five-wicket haul in the first innings that helped bowl England out for just 147 on Day 1. It set the tone for the rest of the days as Australia asserted its dominance at the Gabba.
