5 Indian Cricketers Who Have Already Played Their Last ODI For The Country

The Indian team has achieved immense success in white-ball cricket over the past fifteen years. Apart from the two ICC trophies – the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy – the Men in Blue has also reached the knock-out stages of plenty of tournaments.

With Virat Kohli and co. breeding in youngsters into the Indian team, in preparations for future ICC events, some players are unlikely to make a return to the ODI side. These players may have played their last 50-over game for their country.

Here we take a look at 5 Indian Players Who Have Already Played Their Last ODI:

Dinesh Karthik

The hero of the Nidahas Trophy final, against Bangladesh, Dinesh Karthik last featured for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final versus New Zealand. Although Karthik has made a name for himself as a finisher in T20 cricket, he has been dropped from the T20 side as well following the semi-final loss.

While Karthik, who made his India debut in 2004, may stand a chance to be recalled to the T20 set-up, the management has surely moved on from him in the ODI team. The right-hander has scored 1752 runs in 94 ODIs spread across more than a decade.

Kedar Jadhav

Another player who lost his place from the Indian side after the 2019 World Cup loss is Kedar Jadhav. The right-hander featured in 3 series after the World Cup where he couldn’t go past fifty even once; his last ODI ton came in January 2017.

Jadhav, 36, was a crucial member of the side owing to his supplementary skill of off-spin bowling. However, he may have also played in his last ODI, having scored 1389 runs in 52 innings.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane’s axing from the ODI side was surprising considering he made an impressive 79-run knock in his last series – against South Africa in February 2018. Rahane decently averaged 35 in that series but was never picked again in the ODI side. In fact, in the series prior to that, the Test vice-captain had struck 4 fifties in 5 ODIs against Australia, making his exclusion even more questionable.

He has, at times, expressed the desire to play in the blue jersey again, but it seems like the time for his return has gone. In 90 ODIs, Rahane has scored 2962 at 35.26 with 24 half-centuries and 3 hundreds.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja both were together ousted from the side following the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss to Pakistan. While the latter forced his comeback in the side on his all-rounder skills, the former couldn’t, as leg-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav became a strong pair, who too now stand separated.

Ashwin picked just one wicket in the Champions Trophy and featured in only a single series – versus West Indies – after that.

Although he remains a premier player in the Test side and also has indicated his will to play in white-ball cricket for India again, it’s unlikely that Ashwin will be given a recall to the ODI side. He has plucked 150 ODI wickets and was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning side.

Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma last appeared in the coloured clothing for India in 2016 – an ODI versus Australia in Sydney. Lack of form and injuries have been a constant in his career and hence now remain a Test specialist. Both Ashwin and Ishant continue to play for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL though.

Sharma snared 115 ODI wickets in 80 matches after making his debut in 2007 and played a vital role in the 2013 Champions Trophy final win over England.
