The first two years of this decade, 2021 and 2022, were shocking years for Team India’s leadership. Virat Kohli stepped down as Team India captain post humiliating exit in ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Later, Rohit Sharma was made the skipper in all three formats. However, under his captainship last year, India failed to win two premier tournaments- Asia Cup 2022 and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

While Rohit Sharma has done a good job in bilateral series as Team India captain, he has already reached 35 years of age. After a few years, he will be at the climax of his international career and Team India will need a new captain. The next decade will start after 7 years and there are many youngsters in the current team who can be formidable skippers in future. Here we discuss 5 Indian players who can captain Team India in the next decade.

Shubman Gill is the first Indian player on this list. The right-handed batsman has emerged as a lethal opener for India. He showed an amazing performance in IPL, Tests, ODIs, and T20Is over the last few years. Hence, many are also backing him to become an opener replacing KL Rahul.

Gill recently shattered a double century in ODI against New Zealand. Shubman Gill is just 23 years old currently and after 7 years, he will be 30. If he manages to be part of Team India till that time with a consistent show, he can definitely be picked as a captain of the team as well.

Prithvi Shaw might be not part of the current setup in the national team, there was a time when the Indian player was picked in international games. However, an injury shifted him out of a crucial series and others took over his opener’s slot. Hence, the right-handed batsman has already made his international debut in all three formats.

In 5 Tests and 6 ODIs, he has hit 339 runs and 189 runs respectively at an average of 42+ and 31+. He got out for a duck in the only T20I game he played. Shaw recently made the record for the second-highest knock ever in Ranji Trophy in the 2023 season. Being 23 years old currently, he can gear up his performance and become an internal part of the national team till the next decade. Hence, he might be picked as a captain then.

Ruturaj Gaikwad grabbed the limelight of all when he won the orange cap in IPL 2021 while playing for winners Chennai Super Kings. Gaikwad has also made his international debut and has played 1 ODI and 9 T20Is so far. The opening batter is yet to come up with a fabulous performance for Team India, however, he did slam a half-century in a T20I game against South Africa.
