The IPL has seen a lot of expensive overs and the bowlers have traveled to all parts of the ground on many occasions in the tournament history in the past. Such has been the quality of the batsman in the cash-rich tournament and the bowlers have to make sure that they have a lot of variations or they could be taken to the cleaners.
The game has drifted towards the favor of the batsmen over the years and it has been a nightmare for the bowlers in small grounds in which the thick edges have carried the ball over the ropes. The batsmen have shown no mercy for either the spinners or the fast bowlers. With the ongoing edition gearing up at the peak, it is time to look at the five most expensive overs in the history of IPL.

5 Most Expensive Overs In The History Of IPL:
Chris Gayle (IPL 2012)- 31 Runs

It was in the 2012 IPL edition when the big man Chris Gayle smashed 31 runs off a single over in the bowling of leggie Rahul Sharma. With the ball turning into the left-hander, it was easy for Gayle to clear his front leg and smack it over the boundary lines.
Chris Gayle playing for the RCB franchise managed to hit five sixes in the over continuously after Saurabh Tiwary rotated the strike in the first ball of the over. Pune Warrior Indians felt the heat and Rahul Sharma was under immense pressure after being taken to the cleaners.
Chris Gayle (IPL 2010)- 33 Runs
Manoj Tiwary changed ends in the first ball while Chris Gayle hit the next four deliveries over the boundary rope with so much ease. The final delivery went for five wides and Bopara had to bowl an extra delivery. The next delivery was another wide and the Eight delivery of the over was a single, fortunately for Bopara to complete the over. Despite Gayle’s efforts for KKR, Punjab won the game through Jayawardene’s century in the 2010 IPL edition.
Suresh Raina (IPL 2014)- 33 Runs

Suresh Raina stunned the Punjab team in the second qualifier match with some brutal assault in the bowling of Parwinder Awana in the 2014 IPL season. With the massive chase of 227, CSK needed to get off to an excellent start and they almost reached the 100 run mark at the end of the powerplay.
Awana conceded two sixes and five fours in the over with an extra delivery of a no-ball and CSK ended up getting 33 runs from the last over of the powerplay. It was some phenomenal display of hitting as Raina was dismissed for 87 runs in just 25 balls and CSK faltered after that to send Punjab to the finals.
Chris Gayle (IPL 2011) – 37 Runs

Gayle held the record for hitting the most number of runs in the tournament history with 37 runs in a single over off the bowling off Indian young pacer Prashanth Parameswaran.?? In a match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the 2011 IPL edition, Gayle showed his striking prowess and was very destructive.
The first two balls went for a six and the second delivery was a no-ball too. The next two deliveries went for two fours and it was followed by two sixes. The final delivery was a good ball, but still yielded four and it added insult to injury for the bowler who had a tough time in the match.
Ravindra Jadeja (IPL 2021) – 37 Runs

The all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja showed some clinical hitting in the ongoing 2021 IPL edition as he plundered Harshal Patel for 37 runs in a single over equalling the record of Chris Gayle in the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings. His 62 off 28 balls took the total to 191 at the end of 20 overs.
Harshal Patel is the current purple cap holder and he has bowled superbly at the death. However, the 20th over did not go as he liked as the first four deliveries disappeared out of the ground with one no-ball out of it. The next ball went for two runs and the sixth delivery went again for a six. The final delivery went for a four to finish with 37 runs in the final over of the innings.
