Captaincy can be a burden for many players while some seem to enjoy it and most of the fantastic batsmen have always taken their batting to the next level while captaining the side. A century for a player is very valuable in any format of the game and being the captain, sets the tone for other players as well.

Not many players have been able to score centuries on a consistent basis and Sachin Tendulkar still remains the only player to have scored 100 international centuries. Here are 6 players with the most centuries as captain across formats.

Brian Lara:

Brian Lara is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers of all time and he had a fantastic international career for the West Indies. The left-hander was unorthodox and was one of the most elegant players as well. He is the only batsman to have scored a 400 in a single innings in tests and the record is yet to be broken.

Lara captained the West Indies side for a considerable period of time and he scored 8410 runs in the 172 matches he captained across formats. His tally of 19 centuries is the joint sixth most by any captain across formats.

Michael Clarke:

Michael Clarke was arguable, one of the best players of spin from the Australian side and he had a fabulous career as well. He led the Australian team to a World cup victory in 2015 in his last tournament and retired after that.

The right-hander scored 7060 runs in 139 matches as captain and he scored 19 centuries in his captaincy period across formats for the Australian side. It was a pity that he had to retire early due to the loss of his close friend Phillips Hughes in a tragic cricket accident.

Steve Smith had an excellent stint as the captain of Australia as he scored loads of runs across formats at the time. Having been involved in the sandpaper incident, Smith had to be taken out of the captaincy from all the formats and had to undergo a ban of one year too.

He made the best comeback possible with a brilliant Ashes series and single-handedly saved Australia on many occasions. Smith scored 5885 runs in 93 matches as captain and he had hit 20 centuries during his captaincy stint which is the fourth most.

Graeme Smith is often termed to be one of the best captains of all time and he dominated every part of the world to instil his regime. He took over the captaincy at a very young age for the Proteas and had an excellent success rate alongside his top-order batting heroics

Smith scored 14878 runs in 286 matches as captain and he scored 33 centuries during his captaincy period which is the third most across formats. He is currently serving as the director for Cricket South Africa.

Ricky Ponting:

Ricky Ponting is another superstar who is considered to be one of the all-time greatest batsmen and all-time greatest captain as well. He conquered each and every country with a strong set of squad and was the leader of the wolf pack that Australia had.

Ponting captained Australia in 324 matches across formats and scored 15440 runs in his captaincy period. His tally of 41 international centuries during captaincy is the joint-most for any player in terms of centuries as captain.

Virat Kohli is often called the ‘King’ Kohli and he has indeed played like that around the world. Despite his century drought in the last two to three years, Kohli ranks among the top players to have scored most centuries as captain.

Kohli is arguable, one of the best batsmen of the current generation if not the best and he has scored 11811 runs in 188 matches as captain. He is just one century away from taking over Ricky Ponting as the player with most centuries as captain. He has formed a legacy already and will go down as one of the all-time greats while he retires.
