The olden days of wicket-keeper batsman just playing one role in the side has changed completely, and this is the era of those wicket-keepers dominating as a batsman. It is not easy to play dual roles on the side, and the Wicket Keeper-Batsman has dealt with it in the best possible way so far.
They contribute a lot to the team’s success with the bat, and most of those wicket-keeper batsmen have been really aggressive. They have been sent up the order to showcase their explosiveness with the bat and they can also play the role of a finisher which is the originally assigned role for them. Kumar Sangakkara:
Kumar Sangakkara is one of the finest batsmen to have played the game and the Sri Lankan played as a wicketkeeper for his country in limited-overs matches mostly. The elegant left-hander was one of the masters of the cover drives and he played a huge part in the T20 Worldcup win for the Islanders in 2014.
Sangakkara played 56 T20 internationals scoring 1382 runs at an average of 31.4 and a strike rate of 119.5. He has eight half-centuries in the format for his country which is the fifth most by a wicket-keeper batsman in T20 internationals. His highest score in T20 internationals was 78 and he finished as one of the greatest batsmen of all time.
Quinton de Kock:
The South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock is currently playing in the T20 series against West Indies and he has moved up in the list with another fifty in the fourth T20 international. De Kock is a prolific run-scorer and the left-hander likes to be very aggressive in the powerplay.
The 28-year-old has played 51 T20 internationals so far scoring 1498 runs at an average of 32.6 and a brilliant strike rate of 137.2 at the top of the order. He keeps the scoreboard ticking and has been one of South Africa’s mainstay in the batting lineup. De Kock has scored eight fifties so far in his T20I career which is the fourth most by any Wicket Keeper-Batsman.
Brendon McCullum:
Brendon McCullum always liked to take on the bowlers from the word go and he always kept the pressure on the bowler. He had a phenomenal T20 career in every tournament around the globe for various franchises and he was a key contributor in the T20 internationals for his country too.
McCullum played 71 T20 internationals scoring 2140 runs at an average of 35.66 and a strike rate of 136.21. He mostly opened the innings and the former New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman has hit two centuries and 13 half-centuries in his international career. McCullum went on to make nine fifties when he played as a wicket-keeper which is the third most by a Wicket Keeper-Batsman in T20 internationals.
Mohammad Shahzad:
Shahzad has played 65 T20 internationals for Afghanistan scoring 1936 runs at a strike rate of 134.8 and an average of 31.2. Shahzad hit 12 half-centuries in the format for his nation which is the second most by any Wicket Keeper-Batsman in T20 internationals.
Jos Buttler:
Jos Buttler is one of the most destructive batsmen who can win the match on his own hand and he is a very tough batsman to bowl as he plays the 360-degree shots around the field. Buttler was earlier used as a finisher for England in T20Is but later he moved to the top order where he has been amazing and even more effective.
The 30-year-old has played 80 T20 internationals so far scoring 1791 runs at an average of 31.4 and a strike rate of 140.2. Buttler has scored 13 fifties in T20 Internationals for his country which is the most by any Wicket Keeper-Batsman in T20Is and the graph is expected to go up for him always.
