Founded in the year 1957, the Vidarbha cricket team played first-class cricket for the first time in 1957-58 season. They competed against the other Central Zone sides until 2001-02 season after which the Ranji Trophy was not played on a zonal basis.
Prior to that, Vidarbha qualified for the quarterfinals twice - 1970-71 and 1995-96 seasons. Later in 2002-03 and 2011-12 seasons, the Vidarbha cricket team reached the semifinals of the Plate Group.
In December 2017, Vidarbha created history by qualifying for the final of the Ranji Trophy for the first time in their history. In the final, they defeated Delhi by 9 wickets to clinch the Ranji Trophy title for the very first time.
