He Can Play At No.3 And Help Build An Innings – Sunil Gavaskar Lauds Suryakumar Yadav And Backs Him For Selection In the T20 World Cup Team

Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav and said that he is making a strong case for his selection in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad.

Suryakumar Yadav performed incredibly in the recently concluded three-match T20 International series against West Indies National Cricket Team, where India won by 3-0.

He managed to score 65 runs off 31 balls, including 1 four and 7 incredible sixes in the third T20I at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata and Suryakumar won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the match.

Overall, he finished as India’s top-scorer in the series, with 107 runs under his belt a strike rate of 194.54 and he won the ‘Player of the Series award as well.

Speaking to Star Sports after India’s win in the 3rd T20I, batting legend Gavaskar, said:

“I think he is pretty much making a case for inclusion (T20 World Cup team). In the first match, he and Venkatesh combined to take India home just when things were looking a bit difficult. Today as well. To bat like that when 4 wickets already fell that truly shows the sign that the team is making the right progress.”

Gavaskar was highly impressed with the performances of newcomers Suryakumar and Venkatesh Iyer throughout the T20I series.

“Perfection is impossible. But to have guys who can raise their hand and step up when things are not going their way…don’t forget, he is still a newcomer. So it is not like he is playing international cricket for a long time. Venkatesh too came in only a couple of months back,” he said.

Gavaskar further added that Suryakumar is an innings builder and a finisher. He opined that Suryakumar Yadav can bat at no.3 for the India National Cricket Team.

“He can play at No.3 and help build an innings. Like what we saw in the first game and today the way he can finish it, he is an innings builder and also a finisher. What a great combination.”
