Shreyas Iyer was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ in the 3rd and final One Day International match of the three-match ODI series between Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies National Cricket Team on Friday, February 11 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Winning the toss and batting first India were off to a terrible start as the top-3 batters – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli – failed to score big runs. However, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant played excellent knocks. Also, all-rounders Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar scored good runs and helped India post 265 runs on the board.

Chasing the target, Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies lost half of their side in just 16 overs as they were unable to survive against India’s pace trio of Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar. In the end, Odean Smith played a stupendous 36-run knock but it was not enough to win the match and West Indies lost by 96 runs to lose the series by 0-3.

Iyer, who made a comeback in the Indian playing XI after battling with Covid-19, smashed brilliant 80 runs off 111 balls, including 9 fours to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

During the post-match presentation, Shreyas Iyer said that the last two months were very tough for him as he had an infection and then Covid-19. He asserted:

“To be honest, life was really tough for me last two months. Had a stomach infection and then Covid, but this day has summed up for all those days.”

Shreyas Iyer said that he is flexible enough to bat at any position but he feels that the No.4 batting position is the best for him. He further added that he enjoys performing well under pressure situations. He elaborated:

“ I am flexible to bat anywhere but No. 4 is the best number to bat at. If I am thrown into a pressure situation like today, I thrive on it and enjoy those moments. When I go in, like today’s situation, I had to play off the new ball. For that you need to have good skill and play close to the body. From there you need to set the rhythm through the innings. It’s not easy, but if you focus on your skills you can do it.”
