Former Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on Rohit Sharma, who was pinpointed with his DRS calls in the first ODI against West Indies in the first ODI in Ahmedabad. India won the game by six wickets as they chased down the target of 177 for victory inside 28 overs. Rohit sharted his full-time white-ball captaincy on a winning note. It was also India’s 1000th ODI game which had importance of itself as well.

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar was mighty impressed by the way Rohit used his referrals. He was calm and composed and did not rush with his decisions

Rohit Sharma took three successful reviews in the first ODI. The first was against Darren Bravo in the 12th over where the review confirmed that there was no bat involved and the flat and short delivery from Washington Sundar struck the batter’s pads plumb with the Hawkeye showing three reds.

The second was in the 20th over, when ball-tracking showed that the tossed-up delivery from Yuzvendra Chahal would have rattled against the stumps, hence ending Nicolas Pooran’s 25-ball knock of 18 runs. Virat Kohli convinced Rohit to take the third and final review which turned out to be successful and resulted in the wicket of Shamarh Brooks who edged the ball to the keeper.

Talking to Star Sports in the mid-innings break, Sunil Gavaskar said that the DRS which was Dhoni-Review System earlier is Rohit System now. Rohit took ample time before deciding to go for a review, unlike Kohli during his captaincy. This was referred to by Ian Bishop who was a part of that discussion as well.

“When Dhoni was there I used to call it the Dhoni Referral System. And I mentioned it in commentary that you can now call it the Rohit system because he is getting it absolutely right so far” Gavaskar said.

The former Indian skipper also emphasised the role of the wicketkeeper of DRS calls as well. He said Rishabh Pant being the wicketkeeper should help Rohit in the decision process but he wasn’t sure himself.

“There will be situations where you will be getting it wrong but it is the wicketkeeper who plays the crucial role here because he is going to guide you here as to where the ball was pitched. If the ball hits the pads, below the knee roll or above then the bowler comes in. Otherwise, it is the wicketkeeper who plays a crucial role,” he explained.
