After winning the first ODI by 6 wickets, India would look to continue the winning momentum as they take on West Indies in the second match on Wednesday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Indian Cricket Team put on a clinical performance with bat and ball in the first ODI of the series. Led by Rohit Sharma, India bundled West Indies out for just 176 runs in the first innings on a turning track.

Skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and they elected to field first. Two new young pacers, Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna bowled well in the power play. The duo showed great discipline with line and lengths and hit the deck hard. Siraj sent Shai Hope back to the hut in the third over with a ball which nipped back in after pitching onto the stumps.

Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal then spun a web around West Indies to derail their innings. The duo broke the back of the West Indies batting unit as they picked five out of the top-six wickets inside 22 overs.

West Indies were reeling at 78 for 6 after 22 overs. Jason Holder (57 off 71) and Fabien Allen (29 off 43) later played valuable knocks to help the team reach a respectable total of 176 runs in the first innings. However, it was never going to be enough against a formidable Indian batting unit.

Rohit Sharma, playing his ODI this year, gave the team a perfect start to the chase. He looked aggressive right from the start of the innings and didn’t allow West Indies bowlers to create any sort of pressure. The Indian skipper hit 10 fours and 1 six en-route to his match-winning 60-run knock in 51 deliveries.

His wicket in the 14th over, however, saw a fall of wickets in a very short interval. Virat Kohli got out after hitting two boundaries, while Rishabh Pant got run out after scoring 11 off 9 deliveries. Ishan Kishan also looked scratchy during his 36-ball 28.

By the end of 18 overs, India had lost 4 wickets for 116 runs on the board. Suryakumar Yadav then joined hands with debutant Deepak Hooda and the duo led India’s recovery. They put on an unbeaten 52-run partnership to guide India home in 28 overs.

West Indies, on the other hand, wouldn’t be too pleased with their performance. The shot selections were something to ponder and they would look to make improvements on that before they take the field on Wednesday.

The pitch here at Narendra Modi Stadium offers a good amount of assistance for the bowlers. The last match saw West Indies getting bowled out for just 176 runs in 43.5 overs.

The ball is gripping and turning and, thus, the spinners are having a great time. 7 out of 10 wickets of the West Indies were taken by Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar. One can expect the duo to have a similar impact on Wednesday as well.

The dimensions of the ground are quite big, so you expect the batsmen to take a lot of singles and doubles. Both should look to ball first, upon winning the toss as due is likely to come into the picture in the second innings.
