Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, while talking about Yuzvendra Chahal’s performance in the first ODI of the three-match One Day International series against West Indies, said that the leg-spinner “spun a web around the West Indies batters”.

Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team won the first ODI by 6 wickets against Kieron Pollard-led West Indies National Cricket on Sunday, February 6, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Also, senior Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal won the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo Aakash Chopra was asked about his opinions on the performance of Indian spinners in the first One Day International against West Indies.

Aakash Chopra responded that except Shardul Thakur all the Indian bowlers delivered a good performance. He added that the match against West Indies should have been just another game for leg-spinner Chahal but it was a crucial game for him. He elaborated:

“He [ Yuzvendra Chahal] bowled well, barring Shardul Thakur, everybody bowled well from the Indian bowling unit, when you look at Yuzi Chahal see, yes there is pressure there will always be pressure whenever you are playing for India.”

“But this pressure is also fabricated in a fashion because, why would you question a player’s place in the side when he has been your recurring chief, your primary spinner for last three-four years and suddenly you don’t play him enough. You play him a few times, he doesn’t pick up wickets. And then it becomes an important game, this should have been just another game for Yuzvendra Chahal.”

Yuzvendra Chahal is still your primary spinner – Aakash Chopra

The Cricketer-turned-commentator opined that Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked 4 wickets in 9.5 overs at an economy of 4.98 in the first ODI against West Indies, is still India’s primary spinner in white-ball cricket. He elaborated

“At white-ball level, 50-over cricket, 20-over cricket, he is still your primary spinner, he has picked up enough wickets and he had shown once again he bowls slow, there is some assistance in the surface, and if these are big boundaries and you can’t clear them that easily and he just spun a web around the West Indies batters.”
