IND vs WI: We Need To Give Youngsters Game Time - Rohit Sharma Terms Experimentation As 'Overrated'
Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that the management will be thinking about giving opportunities to the players and having them settle in instead of trying and testing every player in the squad.
In the recent ODI series, India was trying out its opening combo along with some changes in the middle-order. It worked out fairly well, with Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer responding in pressure situations. However, in the long run, Rohit is keen on giving the players more game time.
“The word experiment is a little overrated. Eventually, you have to get out from the squad and the boys. Whatever it takes for us to fill the gaps, we’ll do that but not necessarily with experiments. We need to give them game time.”
“Once we have that, we can try whatever we want to. We need to try and fill those holes, whatever it takes. In the last ODI, we felt the need to give Kuldeep a game. Even in T20 cricket, if we feel there’s a need to do that,” Rohit said in the virtual pre-match press conference.
“The idea is to identify the players who will play the World Cup” – Rohit Sharma
Rohit was made the white-ball captain with an eye on two major World Cups – the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The squads for the same will be built over the course of the next few months. Rohit and co. will be hoping that the injured players can recover in time.
“The idea is to identify the players who will play the World Cup and give them game time. A lot of players are not there in the team. We just want to keep other guys and the backups ready. We have a packed schedule, injuries also happen. It’s important to give the guys who will fill those roles game time. We will give those guys chances in this series and the one afterward,” Rohit added.
The T20I series against West Indies begins on Wednesday and all three games will be played at the Eden Gardens.
