Pakistan vs West Indies ODI Series Postponed Due To Increasing Covid Cases
The ODI series between West Indies and Pakistan has been officially postponed after a meeting between Cricket West Indies (CWI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Three players and two coaching staff members returned positive results, leaving the Windies crew shorthanded. The trio that tested positive on Wednesday was: Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, and Justin Greaves. Along with them, assistant coach Roddy Estwick and physician Dr. Akshai Mansingh also infected the virus.
Even before the start of the tour, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers, and Sheldon Cottrell tested positive and were ruled out of the tour. This left the Windies squad with just 11 players out of the 18 that arrived on the flight. For the purpose of completion, the third T20I is being played in Karachi as per the schedule.
Cricket West Indies and Pakistan Cricket Board’s joint statement:
With an eye on the players’ safety, the two boards decided to mutually postpone the ODI leg, which is part of the Cricket World Cup Super League.
“On Thursday morning and as part of the PCB COVID-19 Protocols, Rapid Antigen tests were conducted on the remaining 15 West Indies players and six player support personnel. All 21 members of the West Indies touring party returned negative test results. As such, Thursday’s T20 International (T20I) proceeded as planned.”
“However, taking into consideration both the teams’ welfare as well as limited resources in the West Indies side for the ODIs, it has been agreed that the series, which forms part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, will be postponed and rescheduled for early June 2022.”
The players and staff who tested positive will have to undergo isolation for a period of 10 days or until they return a negative covid test.
