Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that the upcoming games will provide Virat Kohli with an excellent opportunity to bat freely.
The good news is here for everybody worried about Virat Kohli’s comeback to international cricket. The former leader of India was selected for the 15-man team for the Asia Cup 2022, which will begin on August 27 in the UAE.
A day after the competition starts, on August 28, in Dubai, The Men in Blue are slated to square off against their bitter nemesis Pakistan. For the first time since the end of the England tour, Kohli will make a comeback in this game.
The focus will undoubtedly be on Kohli’s batting performance whenever he returns to the game. The 33-year-old has been going through a difficult time over the past two years. He has been having trouble reaching triple digits ever since his 70th international, which took place in 2019 against Bangladesh in Kolkata. He is having trouble getting even a fifty across formats, thus the situation seems to have gotten worse in 2022.
‘Doesn’t expect a player like Kohli to score big runs’: Aakash Chopra
As per Aakash Chopra, Team India plays an aggressive style of cricket that does not anticipate a player like Kohli to score many runs. He would be required to simply show up and do his bit.
“I am not sure how Virat is feeling or how the team is feeling, but as a watcher, I have decreased my expectations. The reason is that no one on this team, in my opinion, would play for a hundred. Whether it is Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul, they both start swinging the bat as soon as they reach 50.”
“You want to travel there if 220 is feasible. Do not be content with 210, 190, or 180. A player is given the freedom to play freely if the team bats with that mentality. If so, I will not be evaluating a player based on statistics” Aakash Chopra said.
“It is the ideal situation. Given the kind of cricket India is currently playing, the squad does not anticipate Kohli to score 70 or 100 runs or to complete the match. It is more than enough if you just come and play your,” Aakash Chopra added.
Team India will have plenty of opportunities to choose a good 15 before the T20 World Cup 2022 begins in Australia. A minimum of four Asia Cup games, followed by six T20 Internationals played at home against Australia and South Africa, would aid Kohli in regaining his lost form.
