Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar feels the time is running out for KL Rahul and warned the Indian opener to come back in form ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Rahul was out of action for the past few months due to injury and came back in the Zimbabwe ODI series just before the Asia Cup.
The star opener has played five matches since his return to international cricket and is yet to find his mojo. The 30-year-old didn’t play a single T20I for around 10 months prior to the ongoing Asia Cup.
Rahul’s first T20I after his return was against Pakistan where he got out for a golden duck.
If you are not scoring runs and not in form then it’s concerning: Sunil Gavaskar on KL Rahul
The cricket fans and experts around the world criticized Rahul for his lack of intent which was purely reflected throughout his stay against Hong Kong, especially in the powerplay where he had only one attacking shot, which was also against a free hit.
After being asked about Rahul’s form and position for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Gavaskar shed light on the alertness of the Indian vice-captain.
“It’s a matter of the World Cup, where you should only take players who are in form,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
“See, Shubman Gill has batted so brilliantly in Zimbabwe and West Indies so there definitely is a stiff fight for the opening slot, the fight is tough. So if you aren’t scoring runs and are not in form then it’s concerning. It’s a matter of the World Cup, where you should only take players who are in form,” he added.
KL Rahul has a few matches left: Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar further added the fact that there are many in-form players waiting in the wings and it will be better if the in-form players take part in an event like the World Cup.
“There is no scope of taking a chance with someone there, hoping that after 2-3 matches, a player will return to form. No. Because all World Cup matches are tough. Rahul has a few matches left and he will have to score runs otherwise, the selection committee will think what to do next,” Gavaskar added.
India have joined Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage. The winner of Pakistan vs Hong Kong will be the fourth team to progress to the next round of the continental tournament.
