Mitchell Starc is in danger of missing a sizeable chunk of Australia’s blockbuster Test series in India, as graphic details emerge of his nasty finger injury.
The left-arm pace ace will learn next week how many games he can reasonably aim to play in the heavyweight battle when he visits a specialist and undergoes another scan on his battered left middle finger.

Despite the fact that Starc bravely complied with his captain’s request to assist in bowling Australia to an innings and 182-run thrashing of South Africa, the paceman has tendon damage and is unable to straighten his affected digit.
Starc is in a race against time to be ready for the first Test, which begins on February 9 in Nagpur, as the ailment, known as a mallet finger, necessitates the use of a brace for six weeks. Even though Starc wouldn’t be able to bowl with a ball in his hand, he may still stay in shape by imitating his action.

“From the scans the other day, the tendon’s basically gone from the top of the finger, so I can’t straighten it or any of that,” Starc said.
“At this stage, I’m getting another scan in Sydney”: Mitchell Starc
The selectors would be content for Starc to be available for the next few games of the series due to his significance to the team’s success in India, where having speed in the air is essential. Starc would have three extra weeks to prepare if they tried to win the third Test.
“At this point, I’m getting another scan in Sydney and seeing a finger expert work through everything. Obviously, India is coming up, so we’ll see what timetables are up once we work through those discussions next week,” Starc explained.
“Hopefully, it will fit somewhere near the beginning of the tour. Apart from the finger being out of action, I can still train to some extent and bowl in novel ways to maintain my bowling workload. That side will be alright; it’s simply where the tendon’s timeframe enters India,” Mitchell Starc added.
India will host Australia for four Tests and three One-Day Internationals in February-Match next year.
