Australian spinner Nathan Lyon registered an unwanted record during the first Test against Pakistan. The off-spinner became the first bowler in the history of Test cricket to be hit for 250 sixes.

The record was achieved on Day 5 of the Rawalpindi Test which ended in a tame draw. Imam-ul-Haq took on Lyon and lofted him over the long-on fence on the last delivery of the 42nd over of Pakistan’s second innings.

After Lyon, the most number of sixes conceded is 194 by Sri Lankan spin legend, Rangana Herath.

Lyon had a forgettable match on a surface that barely had anything for the bowlers. The flat pitch saw Pakistan rack up 728 runs in total while losing just two wickets, including an unbeaten 252-run opening stand in the second innings.

After piling on 476/4 in the first innings courtesy of centuries from Imam-ul-Haq and Azhar Ali, Pakistan managed to restrict the Aussies to 259, taking a paltry lead of 17 runs.

It didn’t matter, however, as the number of overs left was very few so the Pakistan openers decided to put on a batting show on a belter of a track.

Imam and Abdullah Shafique scored centuries, the former enjoying his second of the game and going on to win the Player of the Match. Australia and Pakistan shared four points each on the WTC points table and remain in first and second place respectively.
