According to the reports, the Pakistan National Cricket Team management including head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and all-format captain Babar Azam had requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to curate dead pitch for the first Test match of the three-match Test series against the Australia National Cricket Team at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The first Test match of the three-match Benaud-Qadir Trophy ended in a draw. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Pakistan scored 476 before declaring the innings, Australia in their first innings scored 459/10 and in the third and last innings of the match, Pakistan scored 252/0.

According to a report in Cricket Pakistan, the hosts think tank including Saqlain Mushtaq and Babar Azam had asked the cricket board to make a slow pitch in contrast to what Pindi Stadium’s pitch typically offers due to a fear of loss as they had young openers, inexperienced pacers in the team and on the other hand Australia had a world-class pace attack.

While talking about the surface in the first Test in Rawalpindi, Australia skipper Pat Cummins had said that Pakistan made an effort to try and nullify the pace bowling in the match.

Turning up to a pitch that’s probably not a traditional pitch you would get here in Rawalpindi, and it’s probably clear they’ve made an effort to try and nullify the pace bowling,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Cummins as saying.

“I think that’s a positive. And, sub-continent conditions, coming away with a draw it’s not a bad result. I think we all tried different things. I think all the quick bowlers, although we’ve spent the best part of three days out in the field, I think we’ve all bowled around about 25, maximum 30 overs each, which in comparison to a lot of Australian Test matches is actually a pretty light workload.”

Meanwhile, the second Test match of the series will be played in Karachi from March 12 and a spin-friendly track is expected at the Karachi National Stadium.
