Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is the main T20 competition of the Caribbean. The tournament was founded by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in 2013 as the Caribbean board joined a host of cricket boards and launched the T20 tournament following the success of other T20 leagues such as IPL and BBL. The tournament replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 as the main T20 tournament of the Caribbean.
CPL Format:
A total of six teams participate in the CPL. The format of the tournament is a league stage followed by the playoffs and final. In the league stage, each team plays a total of ten matches. The teams get 2 points for a win and no point for a loss. If the match ends in no result, the two competing teams get a point each.
After the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the playoffs. Just like the IPL, the CPL has also Qualifiers and Eliminator in the playoffs. The top two teams fight it out in the first Qualifier while the third and fourth placed teams play the Eliminator.
The winner of the First Qualifier qualify for the final while the losing team play against the winner of the Eliminator for a place in the final. On the other hand, the loser of the Eliminator is ruled out of the tournament.
CPL Teams:
A total of six teams participate in the CPL in a season. Since the inception of CPL in 2013, a total of eight teams have played in the competition and two of those teams are now defunct. The first team to be removed from the CPL was Antigua Hawksbills.
The Hawksbills were one of the six teams that were established for the inaugural edition of the Caribbean Premier League. However, the Hawkbills could play only two seasons before being replaced by St Kitts & Nevis Patriots from 2015.
The second team that suffered the same fate was Jamaica Tallawahs. The Tallawahs played in the CPL from 2013 to 2023 and won the competition three times. In December 2023, it was announced that the team would not participate in CPL 2024 due to a lack of support from the Jamaican government. They were replaced in the CPL by Antigua & Barbuda Falcons.
