The appointment of Rohit Sharma as India’s all-format skipper has the feeling of a short-term measure, and while there are plenty of candidates to succeed him, Shreyas Iyer makes a very good case. Shreyas Iyer has captained Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL.

3 Reasons Why Shreyas Iyer Is The Rightful Heir Of Team India’s Test Captaincy

1. Test Form

Shreyas Iyer is in peak form in Tests and if assigned captaincy, he can lead the team from the front. The middle-order batter hasn’t led India in any format before but can do wonders if assigned Test captaincy.

In only 7 Tests, he has amassed 624 runs averaging 56.73 which includes 1 ton and 5 fifties. While he scored 105 on debut against New Zealand, he came up with crucial performances against Sri Lanka at home (92 and 67 in the 2nd Test) and in Bangladesh (86 in the 1st Test and 87 in the 2nd Test).

2. Young Age

Shreyas Iyer’s age of 28 is also on his side and he can be assigned as a future Test skipper in the future if the likes of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul fail in away Tests. Rohit Sharma (35 years) has won both Tests at home against Sri Lanka while KL Rahul (30 years) has won 2 Tests against Bangladesh and lost 1 against South Africa in the 3 Tests he captained.

The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant have been assigned Test vice-captaincy but they don’t have experience of leading India in Tests. Ajinkya Rahane had led India in 6 Tests out of which India won 4 and drew 2 but is out of the team due to poor form.

3. Experience Of Leading In IPL And Ranji Trophy

Shreyas Iyer has experience of leading in IPL for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders besides the Ranji Trophy. The Mumbai born was given the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) after Gautam Gambhir resigned citing poor performance.

27 April 2018 was a big day for Shreyas Iyer as he became the youngest captain ever to lead the Delhi Daredevils team in IPL history at the age of just 23 years during the match against KKR. His IPL captaincy debut was a match to cherish for him as he smashed an unbeaten knock of 93 runs in just 40 deliveries which included 10 massive sixes.

In 55 matches he captained for Delhi Capitals from IPL 2018-2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022, the team won 27 and lost 26. The 2 matches that have ended in a tie resulted in a super over the finish in the favour of DC. Hence his winning percentage is around 50%. Shreyas Iyer was named the skipper of the Mumbai Ranji team in 2018.
