Rohit Sharma is the skipper of India in all three formats currently. The right-handed batsman became the all-format captain of India early this year when Virat Kohli left the skipper’s role in all three formats. However, Rohit Sharma failed to drive an incredible result for the team.

Under skipper Sharma, India not only failed to win Asia Cup 2022 trophy but also failed to reach the final in the tournament. Later, the men-in-blue also failed to win ICC T20 World Cup 2022 title after facing a humiliating 10-wicket loss to England in the semi-final.

Recently, India also lost an ODI series to Bangladesh. Here we talk about 5 reasons why Rohit Sharma should be dropped from the Indian team across all formats.

5 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Should Be Dropped From Team India Across All Formats

5. Powerful Openers Than Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma’s dominance as an opener has faded now. Some other young and emerging openers like Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill are shown outstanding strength as openers across formats.

They are young and can do a better job than Sharma. Hence, with the availability of powerful and young openers, Sharma can be dropped as the Indian opener. Since he cannot play effectively in other batting slots, he can be dropped from the team.

4. Growing Age of Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma will turn 36 years old next year. Hence, he has become a relatively old player for team India. He only has a few years left in his career. Even if he is given opportunities as an opener, other emerging openers will lose the chance to develop themselves.

Hence, dropping Sharma and giving opportunities to young openers will be a good strategy for the future of Indian cricket.

3. Poor Batting Show in 2022

In 2022, Sharma was promoted to skipper but his performance dropped to a great extent. For instance, he had a batting average of 47+ last year in Tests but it dropped to just 30.0 in 2022. His ODI batting average, which ranged in 57+ in 2020 and 2019, dropped to 41.50 in 2022. Earlier from 2013 to 2019, his ODI batting average never dropped below 50.

Similarly in T20Is, the right-handed batsman had a batting average of 24+ in 2022, compared to a massive 38+ and 46+ in the last two years. Hence, Sharma’s lowering batting average proves that his batting form has dropped this year.

2. Failing As Opener in 2022

Rohit Sharma is an opener and being an opener, he has a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. Openers need to give a good start to their team. Even if they cannot score well in every game, they need to perform in most of the games so that the batting unit doesn’t go under pressure frequently.

However, Sharma failed to do that job in 2022. In 2022, Sharma had an average of 27.63 in all three formats combined and slammed just 6 half-centuries in 40 games. He failed to smash even one century. His top knock was unbeaten 76 runs. Hence, as an opener, these are poor stats for the Indian skipper.

1. Rohit Sharma’s Fitness Concerns

Rohit Sharma also has a lot of fitness issues. He faces many injuries and is given rests regularly in series. Being a skipper across all formats, he needs to lead as much as he can. However, after playing one or two series, Sharma gets injured and someone else has to take up the skipper’s hat.

Players like Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul have led the team in many matches this year. Sharma is a regular skipper and opener for India in all three formats, however, he misses many games due to fitness issues. Hence, Sharma needs to be out of the team due to frequent fitness issues.
