Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said that a lot of efforts were made by the Indian board to get the Ranji Trophy back on track.
The Ranji Trophy 2022 season kicked off on Thursday with the first round of matches being played across different venues in India.
Ranji Trophy 2022 season started on Thursday
2019-20 Ranji Trophy title holders Saurashtra take on 41-time champions Mumbai in their opening game of Elite Group D. Tamil Nadu, winners of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021-22, are playing Delhi at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Assam.
India’s premium red-ball domestic tournament was scrapped last year because of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Have been eagerly waiting for this day: Jay Shah
Although the BCCI had conducted white-ball tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20I), the Indian board found it difficult to stage the Ranji matches because of logistical problems.
After so many hurdles, the BCCI has managed to play the red-ball tournament this year in two phases. Shah mentioned that the Indian board wants to take Ranji matches the centre stage.
“Have been eagerly waiting for this day as India Cricket’s premier domestic tournament, the #RanjiTrophy returns. A lot of effort has gone behind the scenes to get our first-class cricket back on track, and it is now time to let red-ball take centre stage. Good luck, everyone,” Jay Shah tweeted.
The Ranji Trophy 2022 was initially supposed to start on January 13 but was postponed after COVID-19 cases were detected in some of the state units.
The BCCI has planned to hold all the league stage matches in the first phase followed by the knockout fixtures in June. The first phase included the February-March window.
